Sangaygang- Chokortse Hike

Sangaygang is a favorite spot for fitness freaks and those with an athletic streak. The area is up in the hills that overlook the Thimphu city. For photography enthusiasts, the bird’s-eye view of the valley at dusk is simply mesmerizing. You can either drive or walk through the hundreds of colorful flags that dot the hill overlooking the Thimphu valley.
On the way up visit
The Takin preserve Centre: It is a preserved park home to the National animal of Bhutan ‘the Takin’. , scientifically known as Budorcas taxicolor whitei, Legend has it that the animal was magically created by Lama Drukpa Kuenley the divine mad man with the head of a goat and the body of a cow to prove his disciples of his divine power and it continues to befuddle taxonomist, who cannot quite relate to other animals. A visit to watch this endangered species is a once in a life time opportunity
Beyond the road point of Sangaygang (BBS TOWER) as you ascend uphill, you will come across resting area adorned with colorful & faded prayers flags . The trail to Chhokhortse continues up, at times to the left, then again along the ridge. It leads through open grassy areas, oak undergrowth and blue pines. Further up it turns to the right and flattens out somewhat.
During weekends, you will meet local hikers and pilgrims. After an hour hike you will come across ‘a Dungkor’ and Chokortse Lhakhang and other several other temples.
The place is popular for meditation.
