Bhutan’s beautiful valleys have numerous crystal clear glacial fed rivers which cut through valleys from high fast flowing rivers to the plain mild river of the Brahmaputra in India. The pristine natural setting and the sheer variety of the rivers’ courses provides a unique opportunity to explore Bhutan’s beautiful wilderness. Adventure travellers will not be disappointed by the rugged, untamed waterways of Bhutan. The rivers are plentiful with strong currents varying between slow and gentle flows to the powerful, raging torrents can be found throughout the country.

 Rivers in Bhutan also offers a great potential for Kayaking. There are easy calm rivers for beginners to hair-raising runs for the veterans. Bhutan’s most popular and exciting rivers to raft and kayak are (Wang Chhu, Puna Tsang Chhu, Sunkosh, Mangde Chhu, Kuri Chhu, Dangme Chhu and numerous tributaries along the way).  The most popular course for rafting in Bhutan is  in Pho chhu –the male river in Punakha. It is  approximately 16 km course with about 15 rapids of class 2-4.We also have Mo chhu –the female river in Punakha  with about 10 Km comprising around 10 rapids with 2-2+ rapids.

Safety

Our rafting and kayaking guides are well trained and will do everything to ensure your safety and they will be beside you at all times. The rivers of Bhutan were first surveyed for potential routes for water sports in 1997 by Gerry Mofatt and Peter Knowles, both experienced rafters/kayakers at the invitation of the Royal Government and the Department of Tourism.

The best time for rafting and kayaking is from March to April and November to December

White Water Rafting  in Bhutan.

After breakfast, an exciting rafting tour awaits, You will be driven to the river side and will brief you on your safety, before rafting   down the   Pho- Chu ( Male River ).You will need to do a little paddling  and you may get a little we’ but it will  be  worthwhile as this journey takes you through  a wonderland of secluded scenic beauty. You drift along to Punakha Dzong, located on an Island in the middle of rivers.

Built in 1637 the Punakha Dzong served as a religious and administrative centre for the region. Currently the Dzong is the winter residence of the holy Monk body of Bhutan.

The rafting tour is expected to last 3 to 4 hours.

After a picnic lunch by the river side, you drive through the upper Punakha  Valley passing  through traditional villages and farmlands you will take a short hike through the farm house to the beautiful Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal temple,   situated on a hilltop overlooking the valley below. The leisurely walk up to the temple would take about an hour. Visit the temple and also enjoy the breathtakingly view.

Dinner and over night at camp by the riverside or your hotel in Punakha.
